Chicago Building code section 18-30-100 text :<\/strong>
\n14. 8.6.5.8 (Safety Bulkhead). This section of ASME shall not go into full force and effect until 36 months after passage (Oct 7, 2009) and publication of this Ordinance (Nov 16, 2009). Provided however, that during such 36-month period, such existing installation shall be tested, at an interval of at least once every 12 months, in accordance with the requirements set forth in 8.11.3.2 (Periodic Test Requirements: Category 1) of ASME.<\/p>\n

ANSI 17.1 2007 text referred to above:<\/strong>
\n8.6.5.8 Hydraulic cylinders installed below ground shall conform to 3.18.3.4, or the elevator shall conform to 8.6.5.8(a) pr 8.6.5.8(b):
\n(a) the elevator shall be provided with car safeties conforming to 3.17.1 and guide rails, guide-rail supports, and fastenings conforming to 3.23.1; or
\n(b) the elevator shall be provided with a plunger gripper conforming to 3.17.3. the plunger gripper shall grip the plunger when the applicable maximum governor tripping speed in Table 2.18.2.1 is achieved.<\/p>\n

Chicago Building code section 18-30-320 text:<\/strong><\/p>\n

18-30-320 Existing Elevators-Firefighters\u2019 Emergency Operation \u2013 Effective Dates.<\/p>\n

On or before January 1, 2015, all elevators with Phase II Emergency In-Car Operation shall either comply with:
\n(1) all of the requirements set forth in 2.27.3 through 2.27.8 of ASME, as modified by items (46) through (60) of Article II of this chapter; or
\n(2) all of the applicable requirements of the Chicago Building Code in existence at the time the existing elevator was equipped or required to be equipped with Firefighters\u2019 Emergency Operation and all the requirements set forth in section 18-30-2610 of the Chicago Building Code adopted on January 10, 2001, and appearing in the Journal of Council Proceedings on page 50236 of that date.<\/p>\n

Provided, however, that if, at the time an existing elevator was installed or altered, the Chicago Municipal code did not require that such existing elevator be equipped with a fire alarm initiating device, nothing in this Section 18-30-320 or in Section 18-30-2610 of the Chicago building Code adopted on January 10, 2010, as referenced in item (2) of this section, shall be constructed to require the installation of a fire alarm initiating device in such existing elevator until such time that an alteration is made to such existing elevator where ASME 8.7 requires a fire alarm initiating device to be installed.<\/p>\n
